How can parents make holidays more productive for kids?

Jul 04, 2017

For long we have known that parents should always be at the back of their kids. However, times are changing and so should parenting. Pushy parents must let children be on their own during school holidays. It will teach them independence and increase resilience.

As parents, you must consider that a complete CV-building process includes overall development and not just studies. Parents should stop forcing their kids to get into controlled schedules that only revolve around studying. Children must give time to interests and hobbies for entertainment and learning.

Productive Holiday Ideas for Kids

The key is to let kids be on their own and develop activities that they like. You must be by their side and watch them take up tasks. Following activities will help you let children be on their own.

Play Dates

Times when you don’t want them to be alone and you don’t want to be a part of their play, you should arrange play dates. Take your children to their friend’s house or ask them to come over. Let the kids have their toys and let them play.

Play dates help them make friends and bond better. After family, friends play an important role in children’s life, and they must have full access to friendship. Play dates let them put up a play in unity and share creative ideas. They also get a chance to have opinions and work them out.

Let them draw

Let kids have all access to painting material. Give them drawing books, brushes, types of colors, and leave them on their own.

Drawing is not just an independent and productive activity, but it is also about creativity. You might not know but your child might go beyond the basics of art that is taught in school. Let them get a chance to nurture their talent.

Give books to read

If your child is above the age when you must story-tell, you should let them read on their own. Bring them lots of books during holidays and let them read on their own. Ask them to briefly tell you about the story and see if their reading habit is improving.

Reading is an essential habit that you must start at an early age. Children not only have better imagination, but keep away from unproductive activities as well. Putting in the habit to read will improve their linguistics too.

Audio books

If your child is still not into reading and you should also let them know the texts, introduce them to audio books. These narrate stories without you having to story-tell.

Your child will soon develop the urge to read books on their own. Audio books are helpful and easy to grasp. Children have lesser chances to divert their mind, compared to what they do while they read on their own.

Educational games

If you must let your children have access to the internet, introduce them to educational games. These games help them improve their learning skills in an interactive way.

Educational games are more fruitful than electronic games that are just for fun. When you add learning with fun, it is an investment to have better knowledge. Subscribe to some educational games that your child likes to play, and let them use your gadgets to keep boredom at bay.

Let them play outdoor

We have almost stopped going to the parks or letting children play outdoors. Parents don’t feel like letting their children come in touch with other children in the society, and it’s all too bizarre.

It is essential to give children a way to interact with their friends outdoor. You might be close to vicinity, but you must also let them be on their own. Playing outdoor will not just improve their physical ability, but also develop skills to react to the environment and people around.

Stepping out alone and shopping

When your kids are old enough walk down the lane and get you some groceries, let them take up such chores. It can be frightening for parents initially, but they will have to do it eventually.

Let your kids get to the nearest stores and buy products on their own. Let them understand the value of money and calculate the amount that should be paid and brought back home. These are little steps that you have to let your child take up, in order to make them more independent.

By now you have realized that productive holidays are not about bossing over or washing your hands off completely. It is about bringing a balance between the two, and knowing which to overpower when.
