I have 12 years of experience tutoring children for the British curriculum. I have a 2.1 bachelors degree in Medical Genetics and a PGCE in Post-Compulsory Education and Training. I have taught different class sizes, ranging from 1:1 to 32 students, developing my behaviour management strategies and ability to differentiate. Active learning is important and I like to challenge students and equip them with the skills to become independent, inquisitive learners who want to progress.
My preference is for students to tell me in advance (at least 24 hours before) what topics they would like covering in the upcoming tutor session. I then go through the content, usually through a PowerPoint, with checkpoint questions or activities in between to assess for learning. The session will end with practice exam questions, a vital part of revision. I am happy to help students with their homework, but again I should be made aware in advance of what topic it is regarding.

As a tutored at New York University for undergraduate students, I supported students struggling in mathematics and Physics. My strength is allowing students to discuss what they understand - a general type of assessment. Shy students, often require a more talkative tutor. Hands-on demonstrations really help. Greeting your student: Saying hello and establish eye contact, be friendly, and try to establish a common bond with them. Ask your student how they got on at school last week, and if there is anything that they would like to cover whilst you are there. 2. Outline of goals for the session: I use a written plan on structuring my time with the student during the session. Informing the student what we will cover, and try to stick to it. 3. Presentation and discussion: I take time to explain the topic in a systematic. If math I review the concept. I start with the basics and build up. In addition to teaching the core material, I provide everyday examples of how it is used. 4. Be flexible: If you notice that your student is particularly tired or mentally drained on a given day, don’t be afraid to veer from previously laid plans and put the focus on fun. Sometimes, the most pleasurable and effortless ways of learning can also be the most effective! 6. Do they understand the topic: I watch out for subtle signs that their students are failing to grasp an important idea. I go over the concepts again in a different way and always try to use it as simple and as a practical example as possible so that your student does not feel that the concept is too esoteric or intellectually demanding. 7. Sweet endings: As the lesson draws to a close, I can also take advantage of the last few minutes by referring the student to interesting websites that will provide practice tests and/or games that will enable them to reinforce their understanding of the concepts learned during the tutoring session.
